What I actually track in a case timeline, month by month
Posting the actual structure of what I log, since "keep a timeline" is common advice but rarely comes with specifics. Each month, I note: what evidence was added or requested that month, any communication with reference letter writers (sent request, received draft, finalized), any changes to my personal statement, and any external event relevant to the case (a new award, a new publication, a role change). Nothing fancy — a dated log, not a formal document. Why this mattered more than I expected: when I sat down to write the personal statement's narrative arc, having an actual month-by-month record made it much easier to describe a coherent trajectory instead of reconstructing my own career timeline from memory, which turned out to be less reliable than I assumed. I'd genuinely misremembered the order of two events by about 8 months until my own log corrected me.
