Employer letters vs. independent reference letters — why I made sure to have both

Building on the community posts here about testimonial-vs-evidence letters — wanted to add a related distinction: the source of the letter matters too, not just its content quality. An employer or supervisor letter is legitimate, real evidence — but it comes from someone with an interest in your success (they may want to keep you, or simply want to help a colleague), and a reviewer may reasonably weigh that. An independent letter — from someone with no employment or supervisory relationship, just professional familiarity with your work — carries a different kind of credibility precisely because that interest isn't present. My mix ended up being roughly half and half: two supervisor/employer letters (genuinely detailed and specific, not just supportive) and two independent letters from people who knew my work through the field itself rather than through employment. I don't think either type alone would have been as strong as having both — the employer letters gave depth on my day-to-day work, and the independent letters gave the kind of disinterested credibility a purely employer-sourced set of letters can't fully provide on its own.
