My first personal-statement draft read exactly like my resume in paragraph form — accomplishment, accomplishment, accomplishment — with no real throughline connecting why any of it mattered together. Working through the narrative structuring prompts is what actually surfaced the throughline I'd been missing. It didn't hand me a narrative — I want to be clear about that, since I've seen some confusion in this community about what these tools do versus don't do. What it did was ask the kind of structural questions that made me articulate, out loud to myself basically, why my path from one role to the next actually made sense as a trajectory rather than a series of separate jobs. Once I had that framing clear in my own head, the actual writing came much easier. The version that came out the other side of that process reads completely differently from my first draft — same underlying facts, same evidence, but organized around an actual argument instead of a chronological list. That distinction mattered more to how the statement reads than any individual sentence-level edit I made afterward.
