What changed in my second attempt at a personal statement

My first full draft was competent but forgettable, and a friend who reviewed it put her finger on why: it read like it could have been written by anyone with my general credentials, not specifically by me about my specific work. The second draft fixed that, and I want to share what actually changed. Concretely: the first draft described my role and achievements in fairly generic professional language. The second draft included specific, sometimes small, concrete details — an actual technical decision I made and why, a specific moment where a contribution was adopted by someone else, the actual reasoning behind a choice rather than just the outcome. Those specifics didn't just make it more interesting to read, they made the underlying claims more verifiable and credible, since generic language is much easier to write about achievements you don't actually have than specific, checkable detail is. The lesson I'd pass on: if a sentence in your statement could describe a hypothetical similar person rather than specifically you, it's probably worth making more specific, even if that means it reads slightly less polished on a first pass.
