What actually happened when a piece of my evidence turned out to be less strong than I thought

Had confidently included a piece of evidence I was sure was strong, only to have a careful outside review (from my attorney, in this case) point out a real weakness I'd genuinely missed — worth sharing since I think admitting to this kind of miss is more useful than only posting about things that went smoothly. The specific issue: a publication I'd counted under scholarly articles turned out, on closer inspection, to be in a venue with much less rigorous editorial standards than I'd assumed — I'd taken its inclusion in my CV for granted without scrutinizing the venue itself. Once flagged, I made the call to de-emphasize it significantly rather than lead with it, and shifted more weight onto other, genuinely stronger publications I had. What this taught me: it's worth applying the same skeptical, verifying eye to your own evidence that you'd want a reviewer to apply — not to talk yourself out of genuinely strong evidence, but to catch the pieces that feel strong out of habit or assumption rather than because they'd actually hold up to real scrutiny.
